Relationships and attachment

Relationships, attachment, and the patterns that keep arriving with different people.

This is individual work on relationships rather than couples therapy. Often that is exactly what is needed, because the pattern usually predates the current person by about twenty years.

Why individual work on relationships is often the right call

Couples therapy is excellent for a specific job. It is less useful when the material is one person's attachment history playing out repeatedly across different partners.

If you have noticed a shape that keeps recurring, and particularly if it recurs with people who are otherwise quite different from each other, then the constant is you and it is worth looking at directly. That is not a criticism. Attachment patterns are learned early, they were adaptive at the time, and they run underneath conscious choice, which is exactly why insight alone rarely dislodges them.

We map the pattern properly. What happens when someone gets close. What happens when they pull back. What you do with anger, and whether you are allowed to have any. Who you learned all of this from and what it cost you to learn it.

The therapy relationship as live material

One of the reasons this work goes deeper in individual therapy than in advice is that the pattern will show up between us. You will at some point manage my feelings, or go quiet after saying something honest, or become slightly performatively fine at the start of a session where you actually arrived upset.

When that happens I will name it, gently and without accusation, and we look at it together in real time. That is often the single most useful thing that happens in this kind of work, because it is the pattern happening now rather than being remembered.

Family, and the version of it that exists in this city

New York is full of people who moved here partly to be further from where they came from, and who then spend a fortnight a year being fourteen again at a kitchen table upstate. Family of origin work is a large part of what happens here: the ongoing negotiation between the person you have built and the role you get handed on arrival at a holiday.

Chosen family matters just as much. For many clients, particularly queer clients and clients estranged from relatives, the primary attachment relationships are friendships, and those deserve the same seriousness that a therapy room usually reserves for romantic partners. Grief over a friendship ending is real grief and it gets treated as such.

Dating, honestly

Dating in this city has particular features: enormous choice, low commitment, and a constant background suggestion that a better option is one swipe away. That environment interacts badly with anxious attachment and it rewards avoidant attachment, and knowing which one you tend towards changes how you read your own reactions considerably.

We work on that with specificity rather than with rules. Not five tips, but an understanding of what you are actually doing and why, so that the next decision is a choice instead of a reflex.

How the work goes

The pattern is older than the person you are currently having it with.

Map the recurring shape

Across relationships, not just the current one. The pattern is usually visible within three or four sessions once we start looking at it deliberately.

Trace it back

Where it was learned, what it protected you from, and why it made complete sense at the time. This is where self blame usually starts to loosen.

Watch it happen between us

The pattern arrives in the therapy relationship. Naming it live is more useful than analysing it in the abstract.

Practise the other thing

Small, specific, uncomfortable experiments. Saying the mildly difficult sentence. Not sending the third message. Tolerating the silence that follows.

Questions

What people ask before starting.

Can we do couples therapy?

Not as a primary service. I work with individuals, and relationship material is central to a lot of that work. If couples therapy is what you need I will refer you to colleagues who specialise in it.

My partner will not come to therapy. Is individual work still worth it?

Yes, and often more than people expect. Changing one person's half of a dynamic changes the dynamic. That can be uncomfortable at first, since systems resist change, and it is worth going into with your eyes open.

Is it too late to change an attachment pattern?

No. Attachment is learned in relationship and it can be revised in relationship, which is one of the reasons the therapy relationship itself matters so much. It is slower than people would like and it does happen.

Do you work with queer and non monogamous clients?

Yes, without needing the structure of your relationships explained or defended. Ethical non monogamy, chosen family, and queer relationship configurations are ordinary material here.

A first conversation costs nothing and commits you to nothing. Fifteen minutes on the phone is usually enough to tell whether we are a fit.
