Questions

The things people want to know and often feel awkward asking.

If your question is not answered here, ask it on the consult call. Nothing about fees, fit, confidentiality or how this works is off limits.

Starting out

How do I actually begin?

Use the booking page or the contact form and say roughly what is going on. I reply within one business day and we arrange a free fifteen minute call. If we both think it is a fit, I offer you a regular weekly slot and we start, usually within one to two weeks.

How quickly can I be seen?

It varies with capacity. At most points in the year I can offer a first session within one to two weeks. If I am full I will tell you immediately rather than putting you on a list that goes nowhere, and I will give you specific referrals.

What if I have never done therapy before?

A large proportion of my clients are first timers, often in their thirties or forties, often slightly embarrassed about it. There is nothing to prepare and no vocabulary you need in advance. The first session page walks through exactly what happens.

Can I switch to you from another therapist?

Yes, and it is more common than people expect. I would encourage you to end properly with your current clinician rather than disappearing, since a clean ending is often clinically useful in itself, and I am happy to talk through how to do that.

How the work runs

How long are sessions and how often?

Fifty minutes, weekly as standard. Twice weekly is available for intensive periods. Eighty minute extended sessions can be arranged in advance when there is a specific reason, particularly in trauma work.

How long will I need therapy for?

Focused work on a specific issue is often three to six months. Longer standing patterns take longer. We review every six to eight weeks, so you will always know where you are rather than drifting for a year.

What happens if it is not working?

We name it and change something. That might mean a different focus, a different pace, adding a referral for a specific intervention, or my helping you find a clinician who is a better fit. I would much rather do that than keep an unhelpful hour on the calendar.

Do you give homework?

Sometimes, and lightly. I might suggest an experiment between sessions, and I will not be marking it. If a structured homework based approach is what you want, I can refer you to colleagues who work that way.

Money and logistics

What do you charge?

$215 for a 50 minute session, $320 for an 80 minute extended session, and reduced fee places between $95 and $165. The consult call is free. The fees page has the full breakdown including how out of network reimbursement works.

Do you take insurance?

I am out of network with all plans. You pay the session fee and I issue a monthly superbill, which many New York plans partially reimburse once the out of network deductible is met. I do not accept Medicaid or Medicare.

What is your cancellation policy?

Forty eight hours notice or more, no charge. Inside forty eight hours the full fee applies unless we can move the session within the same week. Emergencies are handled sensibly.

Where is the office?

119 West 23rd Street, Suite 1012, New York, NY 10011. Closest trains are the F and M at 23rd Street, the 1 at 23rd and Seventh, and the C and E at 23rd and Eighth. Online sessions are available anywhere in New York State.

Privacy and boundaries

Is what I say confidential?

Yes, with the legal exceptions every clinician in New York has: a serious and imminent risk of harm to you or someone else, suspected abuse or neglect of a child or a vulnerable adult, and a valid court order. I explain all of this fully in session one before you disclose anything.

Can I contact you between sessions?

Email for scheduling, answered within one business day, Monday to Friday. I do not conduct therapy by message and I am not an emergency service. For urgent support between sessions, call or text 988.

What if I see you in the street?

I will not approach you or acknowledge that we know each other, because I cannot know who you are with. If you say hello, I will absolutely say hello back. It is entirely your call and we can talk about it in advance if it would help.

Do you write notes about me?

The minimum required clinically and legally, written after the session rather than during it. You have the right to request your records. If you have specific concerns about how notes might be used in a legal context, raise them early and I will be straight with you.

Ready to bring yourself in the most self loving way

A first conversation costs nothing and commits you to nothing. Fifteen minutes on the phone is usually enough to tell whether we are a fit.
